This week's update is written by Joshua Baer.
I recently had the opportunity to tour the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) track that will the home of Formula 1 in November. I'm just starting to fully realize what this means for Austin, the economy, and even the tech scene. Besides being the biggest party of the year and a larger tourist draw than even SXSW, COTA and Formula 1 will attract high tech R&D centers around the race technology. This will cover telecommunications, automotive, entertainment, and many other verticals that will bring talent and investment to the broader tech community.
The past few weeks I've been searching around downtown Austin for a permanent space for Capital Factory. This is more than just a place for our portfolio companies to have their offices, this will be the center of entrepreneurship downtown with plenty of room for events, startup weekends, and extra desks for visiting entrepreneurs and investors to work from. We're looking for 20,000 to 30,000 square feet and will bring a ton of energy and publicity to whatever community we join. If you know of a good spot, please let me know!
For SXSW, the startup-flavored events begin on Thursday, March 8th, with the ATX Startup Crawl. Last year there were more than 2,000 participants at 20 startups downtown! If you're interested in attending, please follow @atxstartupcrawl and join the Facebook event so that you can stay up to date. If you would like to be a host company during the crawl, please email me as soon as possible.
After the crawl is in the history books, there will be an Open Coffee (SXSW Edition), the Startup America Launch, Lean Startup SXSW (Eric Ries, Dave McClure, Ash Maurya, etc.). During SXSW, the Startup Village will be a physical space which serves as a gathering point for entrepreneurs and will also feature mentoring sessions and special events.
